Top 5 Bars in Wellington for Pregnant People

Sipping Without the Spirits: Top 5 Bars in Wellington for Pregnant People

Being pregnant doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the fun. More and more bars across Wellington are beginning to cater to the increasing demand for sober options  – which is great news if you’re pregnant and like a tipple! Offering a range of mocktails; 0% beers, ciders and wines; and homemade sodas, there are plenty of delicious drinks waiting to be tasted.

1. Southern Cross Garden Bar

The Southern Cross has a range of seating options including many large group tables and a stunning garden bar so perfect for big or small groups. As well as offering a range of mocktails, 0% beers and a 0% fizz, this place is great if you are seeking some entertainment. They host a range of musicians and DJs, and offer free activities such as salsa classes, a music quiz, children’s face painting and free parents massage! Definitely one to check out with out without children as some activities are adults only. They are open all week from 11.30am during the week and 9am on weekends with varying closing times depending on the day.

2. Dee’s Place

Newly-opened and hidden, Dee’s Place can be found underground on Cuba Street – look for a black door opposite Hotel Bristol. Whilst there is no set menu as they frequently change their offerings, the staff are incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating of dietary requirements. Give them an idea of what you like in terms of flavours (we asked for something spicy to re-create that after-glow feeling) and make it clear that you are pregnant so they can make sure it is safe. The mocktails were divine! And the atmosphere is laid back and friendly. This hidden gem is open from 5pm Tuesday – Saturday.

3. The Champagneria

Come with your besties – or soon-to-be-mum friends! The Champagneria is gorgeous. Choose your seat: from the vibrant, pink indoor decor; sunny, outdoor seating on Courtenay Place; or a spot on the private rooftop. They offer a full plant-based menu, with great sharing platter options. Specialising in bubbles, they offer the Edenvale Premium Blanc de Blanc which is a 0% sparkling wine (one of our favourites on the market!). Open every day of the week, from lunch time until late Friday – Sunday, and 3.30 until late mid-week.

4. The Library

A Wellington classic, The Library is tucked away up a flight of stairs on Courtenay Place. Great for with friends but also perfect for a date night, it boasts a chic, cosy atmosphere. Their mocktails are to die for, including themed ones for the holidays and a range of flavours from sour to spicy to sweet (think thick, chocolatey mocktails!). Be sure to mention that you are pregnant as some of their cocktails contain raw egg white. They have live music on in the evenings Thursday – Saturday. Ask if you want a seat near the music as there’s multiple rooms. Open every day 5pm – late.

5. Flamingo Joe’s

Located on the waterfront and close to the business district and shopping area, Flamingo Joe’s is a perfect post-work hangout. Beautifully decorated with vibrant colours and plants, it offers both indoor and outdoor seating so perfect no matter the weather. The mocktail menu is delicious and extensive, and staff can create 0% editions of classic cocktails too on request. With lots of seats and both big and small tables, this bar is great for rocking up as a group – get inviting your new friends from your antenatal classes! It is open every day from 11.30am (11am on weekends) and has slightly varying closing times depending on the day.

Whether you hit the bar with your partner, a friend, or your new contacts through various pregnancy networks (see: How To Find Friends When Pregnant), we hope you find a place you feel comfortable, relaxed and have fun.
